2019 Trends

The year is swiftly winding down with the wintery weather as proof here in Texas. Soon, if not already, many Houstonians will be pulling out the Christmas lights and potentially asking themselves some annual questions - why didn’t I add that extra storage this year? Why didn’t I redecorate the hall bathroom like I planned this year? Or is it time to move in 2019? If redecorating or renovating appeals to you for 2019, here are some trending ideas.  

Now trending: wood in the kitchen and variations of a color. Whether you chose wooden floors, chair rails, decor accents or to let your natural cabinets take the stage, natural wood is grounding our kitchens. We are moving away from bright metals and those bold colors of the uber modern are softening to more natural grains and silhouettes. Taking their cue from the wood, cool, neutral color tones are gaining in popularity with slight variations of the same hue giving spaces an off-monochromatic vibe.  

Continue the color trend into the dining area with a bold dash of dark! Accent walls have long been popular but 2019 takes it to the deepest darkest depths. Make that accent wall the negative to your neo-monochromatic palette by pairing whites with black, tans with navy or greys with purple. Don’t want to commit to one bold color? Try a wall hanging or tapestry. Once the favorite of Highland castles or college dorm rooms, tapestries in patterns, solids or scenes bring a sense of interest and texture to a space without long term commitment, and it can be as simple as hanging floor to ceiling drapes on a wall without a window.  

In the living room, we continue the trend of bringing the outside indoors with the addition of sliding doors or faux barn doors in transition areas, hanging or potted plants and natural lighting. As a contrast to all the nature, clean, minimalist lines should frame windows and doorways.  

The use of natural light carries over into the bathroom where many designers are creating spaces where the vanity is at or near a window so you can enjoy your view while your make-up routine benefits from natural light. Open concepts blend the vanity area with the closet and the bedroom. Opposite the window? An accent wall presents visual interest to the outdoors either with wallpaper or art. With over all designs, the open concept lends well to a minimalist approach with 1-2 textures and colors with straight, modern lines. An update on the minimalist shapes is to decorate with spa like details and art deco flair.  

With a few updates, a tired space can feel reinvented and rejuvenated; ready for another year.
