Tree Removal in League City, TX

If you are new to the League City community you may not know that you need a permit to remove trees in our area. Below is a summary of what you need to know before you start taking a tree down.

Do I need a Tree Removal Permit?

As stated in the city's Code of Ordinances, a permit is required to cut or remove any tree that is 19 inches in diameter or larger. The following are exemptions:

  • If the tree is not on the Tree List 
  • The residential property is more than 100 acres in size or if the property is a primary residence
  • Trees that are not part of a Tree Disposition Plan or required for the landscaping of a commercial development
  • Trees damaged by natural disasters (thunderstorms, windstorms, floods, earthquakes, fires, or other natural disasters), and is determined to be hazardous
  • When removal is necessary as determined by Fire Department personnel while actively fighting a fire
  • Trees being grown as part of a licensed nursery business
  • Public utility companies with a franchise from the city and city crews are exempted from the requirement for the purposes of clearing and maintaining so as to provide safe and adequate services

How do I get a tree permit?

  • Download the online Tree Disposition Permit Application
  • Print it out, complete it, and submit it to the City Arborist, or fill out the electronic application and email Heather McKnight the completed application.
  • Provide payment of the Tree Permit fee in the amount of $50.00, payable to the City of League City.
