Quail Valley - Was it named for quail in the area?

The answer to the question from many locals is: Yes, from 1910, the Quail Valley Land Company owned about 2,000 acres of land in the area and for a number of years these men used the land as a game reserve for the hunting of quail, dove and rabbit.

In the mid-1940s, one of the family of original land investors, Charles E. Cooper, changed the name of the development to Quail Valley Country Club. In its heyday in the 1950s, Quail Valley - Missouri City was a recreational resort that eventually fell on hard times by the late 1960s. There were existing homes on the property in 1969 that eventually became the Quail Valley Subdivision. At the time, the area was quite rural and most of the homes were close to FM 1092 and Cartwright with gravel drive/roads to the houses. Currently, these homes would be in the Quail Valley Sections of El Dorado, La Quinta, Thunderbird West Courtyard and Thunderbird I and Quail Valley North. These homes had electricity but used water well and a septic tank.

In 1969, a land development company came and purchased enough property to subdivide and also built a private golf club and course. A few years later, Quail Valley Gold Club hosted the 1973 and 1974 Houston Open.

During the mid-1980s oil bust in the Houston area, many neighborhoods were affected and Quail Valley-Missouri City was no exception. Since many of the original home buyers had become empty nesters and there were many more master planned communities to choose from, homes that didn't sell were leased and the downward spiral of Quail Valley home values began. By the time Missouri City took over Quail Valley Golf Course in 2010, there were over 100 Quail Valley homes for sale. By then, real estate prices had started their climb from the 2008 lows, supply and demand kicked in, bringing first time home buyers and a positive atmosphere to the neighborhood.

Quail Valley - Missouri City schools are Fort Bend ISD schools and all within a short drive from anywhere in the neighborhood. The schools are Quail Valley Elementary, Quail Valley Middle School and Elkins High School.

Though the Quail Valley Country Club first opened as a private facility (1970), since 2012, the Quail Valley golf courses have been open to the public with reduced rates for residents of the Quail Valley neighborhood. The El Dorado golf course was redesigned featuring rolling terrain and the La Quinta course with a more classic, target-style with elevated greens. Quail Valley - Missouri City public golf courses are have been cited as some of the best public courses in the Houston area. Various golf outings or tournaments are held throughout the year. Featuring a modern and beautiful atmosphere, the Missouri City Centre at Quail Valley is where residents come to play golf and enjoy the Bluebonnet Grille restaurant with indoor seating and an outdoor patio. Facilities are also used for business or association meetings and boasts an open-air event space, a treed outdoor area for ceremonies, and 3 larger event or ballrooms. A natural setting offers views of both golf courses and is an excellent venue for tournaments, events or special occasions.

Quail Valley - Missouri City residents work with each other and community officials to inspire and perpetuate an active and social lifestyle evidenced by the many clubs, groups and societies available. These groups include: Missouri City Green, Quail Valley Mother's Club, Quail Valley Garden Club, Exchange Club of Missouri City, Rotary Club of Oyster Creek and American Legion Post 294.

Many of Missouri City's award-winning parks are located in or near Quail Valley. They provide approximately 180 acres of green space and various recreational activities that include fishing, basketball courts, sport fields, playground equipment, trails, as well as pavilions that may be rented. Local parks to try are, MacNaughton Park, Community Park, Mosley Park, Oak Hill Park, Quail Valley North Park, Ridgeview Park, and Roane Park. Quail Valley - Missouri City also has miles of traditional and paved trails for walking, hiking, biking, and running. The better known trails are Edible Arbor Trail / Oyster Creek Trail, MacNaughton Park Trail, Community Park Trail and Ridgeview Park Trail. Both the La Quinta and El Dorado golf courses are open to pedestrian traffic (walk or bike) at certain times.

All in all, Quail Valley - Missouri City is one of those well-established neighborhoods with a home town feel. Quail Valley homes prices per square foot are typically less than newer Missouri City communities. That alone could be a great reason to check out Quail Valley.
