Free Outdoor Yoga in Houston

Posted by Amber Kuhl

From rooftops to gardens to bars, spring is the perfect time to take your fitness routine outside. Luckily some of our favorite Houston yogis and yoga studios agree, creating new events to nudge us outside—and did we mention many of them are completely free? You’ve got no excuse not to dig deep into your chair pose when you’re not digging into your wallet to cover it. So get out there this season and hopefully we will see you on the mat.

Black Swan Yoga at Raven Tower

What started as a month-long event last June has turned into a legit Houston yoga craze. #BlackSwanSundays take place on the first Sunday of every month from March through December on the serene bayou-facing deck of Raven Tower. On nice mornings, mats pack the space, so always arrive early for a good spot. Black Swan has their teacher list up for the rest of the year, so if you have a favorite you can even plan ahead. BSY teachers are also leading free classes during this year’s Free Press Summer Fest on June 4 for those who want to feel centered while taking in the show.

Get Bendy at Beaver’s

Thanks to an ample backyard and copious deck space at the new Beaver’s on Westheimer, the restaurant is kicking off its inaugural free monthly yoga events on May 6 with Get Bendy at Beavers, hosted by Houstonian Ash Ignite of Black Swan and Define, POP Studios PR and Yoga Spots. (Full disclosure: Yoga Spots is my company.) The event also includes a raffle through Eventbrite with all proceeds benefiting Bluebell Rescue Pups. With a trifecta of dogs, yoga and fresh juices, we’re excited to see what they have in store.

Breakfast Yoga Club

With a mantra like “Yoga+Music+Food+Community=AWESOME,” the grassroots organization known as The Breakfast Yoga Club really can’t go wrong. Run entirely by volunteers, BYC has been hosting free yoga events at beautiful spaces like Rienzi since 2011, typically on Saturday or Sunday mornings during the first weekend of the month. Their next pop-up yoga experience takes place at the Levy Park Conservancy on May 7.

Rise and Shine Rooftop Yoga

The 7:30 a.m. start time can be a challenge, but those who rise in time for The Hines Center for Spirituality and Prayer’s free Rise and Shine Rooftop Yoga on April 22 and subsequent Saturdays will be rewarded with stunning downtown views and a gorgeous start to the weekend. After the class, held on the top floor of the parking garage at 511 San Jacinto, enjoy a light reception at the center’s newly redone space at the corner of Prairie and Fannin—its a great way to explore all the services the folks over at Hines have to offer.

Discovery Green

The granddaddy of all free yoga programs, Discovery Green’s free hatha yoga classes every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. on the Sarofim Picnic Lawn can’t stop and won’t stop (unless it rains).
