Angkor Wat

Hopefully you’ve noticed my absence? I’ve been on holiday for the last 2+ weeks.

If you did, I’m back!

If you didn’t, then you doubtless enjoyed the break from my weekly outpourings almost as much as I did not having to write them!

I was away primarily to visit my son, who lives and works in Bangkok, but we took the opportunity while in that area to travel to Siem Reap, Cambodia and to Saigon, Vietnam, exploring that part of the world for my first time. Visiting other parts of the world, particularly the more under-developed parts, provides a perspective on one’s own life that can’t be taught in the classroom or learnt from watching TV. The sights, the smells, the food, the people and the traffic - you have to witness them all first hand to really appreciate what it’s like.

Here’s a picture of the main temple at Angkor Wat, part of an incredible ancient city (12th Century), discovered in the jungles of Cambodia by French explorers in 1856. It was so overgrown by trees and vegetation that it had laid undiscovered for nearly 500 years. I wonder if Houston would survive as intact if left undisturbed for 500 years?
