Sugar Land to Celebrate Bike to Work Day

Sugar Land, TX - The City of Sugar Land and Shape Up Fort Bend will celebrate National Bike Month on Friday, May 15 with the fifth annual Bike to Work Day and third annual Bike to School Day.

Join residents, neighbors and friends for a celebratory ride from Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd., to Fort Settlement Middle School, 5440 Elkins Road, and Sugar Land Town Square at U.S. Highway 59 and State Highway 6.

The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with fun, food and prizes at the South Meadow Pavilion at Sugar Land Memorial Park , located adjacent to the Pawm Springs Dog Park.

Participants will depart at 8:15 a.m. for a 1.1 mile ride along University Boulevard to Fort Settlement Middle School. After dropping off students, Bike to Work Day participants will continue another 6.4 miles along Commonwealth Boulevard, Austin Parkway and Lexington Boulevard to their destination at Town Square, where a group photo will be taken.

Local bike shops will be available to answer questions about bikes and related equipment. Participants must pre-register and bring their own bicycle and helmet in order to participate.

Bike to Work day takes place during National Bicycle month, celebrated nationwide to spread awareness of bicycling opportunities in the community. The local celebration is an opportunity to share efforts to make Sugar Land a safe environment for bicyclists.

The event is also an opportunity to stress the importance of understanding state and local laws that apply to bicyclists, sharing the road legally with motorists and demonstrating the bicycle as a useful form of transportation.

The City of Sugar Land encourages all riders to wear bright clothing, travel in the direction of traffic, stop at all stop signs and traffic lights and follow all traffic laws.
