19th January - The Pelicans Crossing

After what seemed like weeks of dull, grey cold weather, we finally got some glorious and warm sunshine with which to enjoy a round of golf in.

The birds around the lakes and waterways in Houston are as varied as they are often rather large and scary (the birds that is, not the lakes). None more so than the pelicans. Not easy to spot in this picture I'm afraid but trust me, they are the five blobs in the sky - the blobs below are fellow golfers. But have some sympathy with the cameraman in his attempt to bring wildlife to your screen - it's not easy to take a picture when walking with a push-cart with one hand (we call them trolleys in the UK) and trying to take a photo of a flying-fast flock of pelicans with the other (and that's not easy to say either!). I had hoped to catch them in their oft-seen V formation but as they say, one should never work with animals or children ...

But as a moving target across an incredibly deep blue sky, I was pleased with this one and only shot that I managed to take. Sadly, the other 87 shots it took me to get around the 18 holes on the golf course was a far less impressive performance :-(
